If you received a returned email that refered you to this page when trying to email somebody whose account
is on ript.net (or any of the domains that ript.net hosts) please read below to find out why this happened
and possible ways to resolve the issue to get your message delivered.
Possible Reasons for a Blocked Message

Message automatically rejected as possible Spam. See http://ript.net/spam/
Ript.net runs spam filtering software which automatically processess the content of incoming emails
to determine if they are similar to other messages which are known to be spam.

The Distributed Server Boycott List (DSBL) provides a list of servers that
have been confirmed as open relays, which means they will send mail from anyone to anyone.
This makes them perfect for spammers and they are frequently used for this purpose.
This list is updated and controlled by DSBL and the people that submit test messages to it through open relays.
Ript.net will not accept mail from any server that is listed in the DSBL.

Since not all spammers use open relays, or have invalid reverse dns records,
ript.net runs an internal Realtime Block List (RBL) of server addresses
that are known to have sent spam to ript.net in the past.
This list is updated and controlled by me (Brook).
Ript.net will not accept mail from any server that is listed in our local RBL.
Unblocking Legitimate Messages

Avoid your message being incorrectly tagged as spam
In the event that your
email was incorrectly identified as spam, there are several things you can do to decrease the likelyhood
of your message being rejected.
- Send the email in plain text, no HTML, colours or formatting
- Don't include any statements that could be mistaken for advertising
- Don't use lots of !!!!, ALL CAPS, or other similarly annoying things

Getting out of the DSBL
Please see the Distributed Server Boycott List for information on how
to have your mail server's address removed from the DSBL.
- Getting out of the ript.net RBL
It is possible that a legitimate, well-behaved mail server could inadvertantly get listed in our RBL. If you tried
to send an email to a user on the ript.net server and it was rejected, or if you are a ript user and an email from
somebody you know got rejected, then send an email to spam(at)ript.net (from
a non-blocked email account) and request that the IP address listed in the returned message be removed
from the RBL. If you don't have access to an email account that isn't blocked by the RBL, then ask somebody else
to send the message for you, or grab a temporary email at Hotmail.
In the meantime, you may wish to use an alternate email account to send your message.
Blocking Spam
If you repeatedly receive spam from the same source on your ript.net email account, you have several options.
If you have access to a linux machine and some technical know-how, visit the DSBL site and find out how you
can test and submit servers to it. Otherwise, forward one of the offending emails to
spam(at)ript.net. The message MUST INCLUDE ALL HEADERS from the
original email, otherwise I won't be able to tell which server it came from. If I receive a valid request
to add a server to the local RBL then I will do so and no more email from that host will be accepted
by ript.net.
Report Spam
If you receive spam from a well known ISP server such as
Yahoo! or
Hotmail
then please report the message to the appropriate site, as it's not practical for us to block all incoming mail from
these servers. Be aware that just because the return address on the email contains @yahoo.com or @hotmail.com it
doesn't necessarily mean the message really came from their servers, see the given links for more information.
